Dentures

Missing teeth used to be replaced by artificial crowns, bridges, removable partial or full dentures where the tooth was not replaced leaving an empty space between teeth. The bone shrunk and with the time the original supporting bone tissue disappeared – so called atrophy. This process resulted in poorly fitting dentures due to which many patients lost their self-confidence and consequently tried to avoid social contacts. Sometimes it was also necessary to sacrifice healthy teeh in terms of preparing and using them as fixations for artificial replacements.

Today, we have a solution to this problem. We are able either to replace the tooth by an implant or insert miniimplant to attach the denture to it.

Hybrid dentures – special attachments

Hybrid replacements are the cross-breed between permanent denture and removable denture. They are used especially in patients who have no possibility to obtain permanent dentures or implants because of health or financial reasons.

Hybrid replacement is inserted into the patients mouth with a use of special attachments fittings. The first part of the replacement is placed into the patients mouth permanently attached either to the tooth or to an implant. The second part is placed into the body of the actual hybrid replacement. After being clipped into the patients mouth the replacement is as if "permanent" but it is possible to remove it. There are no clips and wires seen in patients mouth and at the same time the replacement holds and sits more properly. These replacements belong to most difficult prosthetic laboratory works.

The generation of our grandmothers and grandfathers is somehow connected with „teeth in the jar“. For most of the people it represents a nightmare, especially for ladies. Even though the full dentures are called “teeth in the jar” first of all they belong into the mouth.

If the condition of our teeth is that far gone that even “the Last of the Mohicans” served out, we still have to chew our food and we also need to smile from time to time! Last but not least, in order to be able to articulate the words properly we need to place our tongue against the front teeth.

What can the modern dental medicine offer us in case we already have toothless upper or lower jaw or maybe even both? At this point we consider three possible solutions to the existing problems. Either to stay toothless or to have our dentist to construct us a removable full denture „paid by the insurance“. In other case we can invest money into several dental implants to have done a permanent non-removable denture.

We leave the first variant without comments. Let us leave aside also the third variant telling us about the permanent non-removable denture fixed on several implants.

We would like to talk about the removable full denture now. These dentures bring to many patients quite a few problems and they end up mainly in that “jar”. They are normally inserted into the person´s mouth only at the times of family or social events. It takes great effort for the person not to let his dentures end up bitten-in a steak or laying on the floor while everybody around is laughing and where they may serve as a toy to house pets.

Dentures are not ideal, they simply do not hold. The inadequate adhesion, fixation of full dentures can be caused by several factors. It is due to technical capability of dentures – we will not be able to bite into an apple anymore. It is also due to the amount and character of saliva, mucous membrane, the mucous membrane folds pulling and also the ridge of the jaw bone the dentures lean against. The ridge of the jaw bone is often affected by so called resorption losing the bone tissue material. During this process the area the dentures lean against becomes smaller. This plays considerable role in case the lower jaw is affected. Comparing to upper jaw the lower jaw provides much smaller space for fixation of dentures. The stability of dentures is also affected by inevitable movements of the tongue.

We make a use of the upper denture´s ability to be held in place by suction to the relatively large area of a hard palate. Well then - full lower denture does not hold. With full lower denture we are not able to eat, speak and all it seems that it does more harm than good. And we would love so much to chew our favourite food without fear and we wish to lighten up our faces with a sparkling smile!

What to do about it? A very effective method for solving the problem is exactly the construction of hybrid dental prosthesis – the combination of removable full denture with two titanium implants that attach denture to the jaw.

The dental implant is here in a form of a titanium screw. Under local anaesthesia to numb the tissues the implant is placed tightly inside a hole which is drilled into the bone. After the procedure which takes approximately twenty minutes the bone then grows closely around the implant and holds it in place. Depending on implantation system used the process of integration of the implant with bone usually takes from 6 weeks up to 5 months. However, in some cases it is possible to place dentures on the new implants immediately after their insertion in the jaw bone!

Reading these lines perhaps the eyes of some of you have lightened up with becoming conscious that exactly this would be a solution to your problem, and we believe you. But then again, it is not all that easy.

Each person who wish to receive this type of treatment needs to meet certain criteria concerning his health condition. Liver or kidney disorders, osteoporosis, diabetes and immunity defects could represent a limiting factor. The patient alone may have a significant influence on the implants long-time function in terms of maintaining an excellent oral hygiene. Important part in the possibility of a successful implantation also plays the adequate width and height of the patients entire jaw where the implant is to be placed. If it is not possible to place an implant we offer you another solution in form of a miniimplant.
