Implants

What are implants?

Implants are artificial teeth roots surgically placed into the jaw bone. They are used in combination with crown, bridge or removable dentures.

Who is the suitable patient?

Adults with healthy parodont - a ligament tissue that connects teeth with the jaw bone, and adults with quality bone tissue and an excellent oral hygiene.

Time needed?

The implantation self takes one or two visits to a dental surgeon. The entire process including healing and integration of the implant with the bone is completed within 3 - 9 months. Recommend are monthly regular check-ups after completion of the implantation procedure.

In solving the wide range of dental problems the implants became the most powerful instrument in hands of dentists as well as the patients. In the decades of development and improvement during which the implants took on quality the implantology reached nowadays the point where this method of treatment is as common as is the use of dental bridges or dentures. Implants can be used at any time – from after losing one tooth up to the stage where the replacement of the entire dental arch is needed.

In this article we concentrate on three areas where the implants are used most frequently. Implantology is not a discipline solving all dental problems. But without any doubts, you will be able to see the implants being used in the dentists´ practice more and more frequently.

The use of implants

As previously told the implants have a wide range of use. In the following text we describe three situations where the use of implants is especially suitable and where the chance of improving the quality of patient´s life is extremely high.

Here it is very convenient to use implant provided the neighbouring teeth are absolutely healthy without requiring crown. In classical treatment that uses a fixation bridge it is necessary to prepare the adjacent teeth to be fitted with crown that in this case plays a role of an abutment. There is no problem if the adjacent teeth are heavily decayed. But if they are healthy and intact or having only small fillings in them, the preparation for crowns represents relatively aggressive intervention into these teeth. In short, crowns are excellent when you need them, but on the other hand they are not very good for healthy teeth!
Â
This is a defect resulting from one-side loss of molar and premolar teeth and where there is no suitable tooth left at the back to attach the bridge to. This problem is normally solved by using a removable partial denture. However, to place a removable partial denture in case of the one-side defect could prove difficult because of the stability problem of such denture. Bridge attached to implant spares the patient from having to wear such an awkward metal construction.
Â
Having to wear lower and sometime as well upper dentures often represents major discomfort for the patient, especially when chewing, because of difficulties in holding the dentures properly in place. Using all sorts of adhesives could improve the situation but one cannot speak about the patient´s full satisfaction with such an arrangement. However, several implants provided with special fittings that serve as attachments for the dentures could significantly improve patient´s comfort.

Placing implants

Implantation is relatively simple surgical procedure where the dentist carefuly inserts the implant into the jaw bone. The healing process takes 3 - 6 months during which time the implant tightly integrates with the bone. This process is called osseointegration.

After complete integration of implant into the bone the dentist prepares classical crown, brigde or denture with attachment fittings.

The patient´s personality and health condition are the factors that usually determine the suitability of using an implant. It is very risky to use implants particularly in untreated or decompensated diabetic patients, heavy smokers and in patients with inadequate oral hygiene. Observing all principles and the exact technique the success rate of implantation procedures reaches 95%. Complications are usually caused by bacterial infection that destroys the tight integration between the bone and the implant which consequently fails to function.
